To German television audiences, the young man bent over a newspaper at Sale e Tabbachi, a posh Italian restaurant in Berlin, is Mustafa, the son of a Turkish farmer who left home in 1969 for a backbreaking job in a Cologne coal mine.
In real life, the 26-year-old is Erhan Emre, an actor. The gold rush that drove his real-life parents and thousands of other Anatolian villagers to Germany in the 1960s and 1970s is the backdrop for Zeit der Wnsche (Time of Wishes), atelevision drama aired last month on ARD, Germany's main state-owned channel."
