'Weeping Willow'
by Nazim Hikmet Flowing
Was the water, showing
In its mirror the willow trees.
The weeping willows in the water washed their hair.
Striking the willows with swords burning, bare,
Ran the red horsemen to where
The sun sets. Suddenly
Like a bird
Like a bird struck in the wing,
A wounded horseman rolled from his horse,
No shout, no cry,
As the riders rode by;
Only he looked with brimming eye
At the bright hoofs of the far-off riders. Alas
Alas that he
No more shall lie
Along the foaming necks of the horses
As they swiftly gallop away;
Now with his sword behind the white armies shall he play. The sound of hoofs fades slow away,
The horsemen vanish toward the setting day.
Horsemen, horsemen, red horsemen,
Their horses winged with wind Their horses winged with
Their horses winged
Their horses
Horse
