Dar Al Hayat:Turkey and the EU

"Turkey and the EU
Yasser Al Zaatera Al-Hayat 2005/01/6
Turkey Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan deserved the warm welcome of his Justice and Development Party's members when he came back from Brussels, not only because of the negotiations he held with the European Union (EU) leaders, but also because of the so far achievements he carried out.
Although the Justice and Development Party was the only one to celebrate these achievements, yet, the whole Turkish street was concerned.
The conditions set for Turkey's adherence to the EU show that Europe's mouthpiece was wishing Turkey would quit because it encompasses 80 million Muslims, especially under the growing pressure of terror.
Erdogan's efforts are praiseworthy for they will boost Turkey not only at the economic level for they will open the doors to foreign investments, but also, at the political and social level.
Erdogan today is a national leader who is not thinking about the Islamic Nation or restoring the Ottoman Empire. He is thinking about a modern state that is closer to Anglo-Saxon's spirit than to the radical French secularism. "
