PARIS -- Much has been said about how Turkey, once admitted into the European Union, will help change the face of Europe by doing its part to bridge the gap between Islam and the West.
As EU leaders in Brussels debated over what date Ankara would be invited to begin accession talks, the question many more Europeans asked was how would admitting a country of some 70 million Muslims into the EU affect the rest of Europe? Of particular interest was how could moderate Turkey help Europe deal with Islamist activists, such as the one who killed Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh? Or, for example, how to deal with radical imams preaching discord in a number of European mosques. "
