Brief News:

Austria is the second Member State after France that has said it would hold a referendum on Turkish accession into the European Union. The announcement came on 17 December from Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schssel after the EU summit had given the go-ahead for starting negotiations with Turkey.
On 1 October, French President Jacques Chirac asked his government to draft a constitutional amendment that would require a referendum before each round of EU enlargement. The clause would not apply in the case of the countries next in line to join the bloc, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia."
