Dec. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Renault SA Chief Executive Officer Louis Schweitzer expanded the company's plant in Bursa, Turkey, in 1993 so it could make cars for the European Union. Exports from the factory totaled $1 billion last year.
EU leaders Dec. 17 agreed to begin membership talks with Turkey. In a concession to France and Austria, where a majority of voters oppose Turkey entering the bloc, they said the 10- to 15- year negotiation process may result in no more than an economic alliance. As the politicians deliberate, Schweitzer and other business leaders support stronger links with Turkey. "
