"Away We Go: Museum exhibits Ottoman fashion
By MARGARET HORTON EDSALL, For The Capital
Centuries before Gucci and Ralph Lauren galloped onto the scene, the Ottoman Empire had fashion all sewn up.
Through Jan. 22, visitors to the Smithsonian's Sackler Gallery will have the pleasure of seeing 'Style and Status: Imperial Costumes from Ottoman Turkey.' This magnificent exhibition is the first international display devoted to telling the story of imperial Turkish 'Robes of Honor' (kaftans), commissioned and worn by sultans and the aristocracy during the 16th and 17th centuries, and 'People of Accomplishment,' weavers who conceived the brightly colored, bold designs and created opulent items of personal luxury that became synonymous with the cultural, political and artistic ideals of this period.
