Stabroek News-Turkey in the European Union?

"Turkey in the European Union?
Wednesday, December 8th 2004
Why take an interest in Turkey, a Middle Eastern country not often in the news that comes through to Guyana but there was, one recalls, the bombing of the British consulate and a bank. Earlier there had been Turkey's refusal, although a member of NATO, to permit the US to use its bases for the northern assault on Iraq. Just now there is the chatter about its application for membership of the European Union (EU).
From the perspective of the EU, Turkey is the odd man out, rather as Haiti was to Caricom. But what is of enormous interest is how the EU deals with Turkey as this will say a great deal about how the EU relates to Islamic countries. It will also, among other things, be a test of whether the EU can be counted upon to keep its promises. At present Caricom is hurting at the cavalier way in which the sugar reform proposals are being pushed through. "
