If the referendum clause is approved by the French parliament, it is quite likely that other EU member states - particularly Germany, Austria and Benelux, where there is considerable opposition to Turkish membership - may follow suit. Already Italy's right-wing Northern League party - a part of the ruling coalition - has indicated its support for the referendum proposal
French President Jaques Chirac threw a mini bombshell recently when he advocated an amendment in the French constitution to allow a national referendum on the question of the Turkish membership of the EU. He justified his proposal by stating that "naturally one can't underestimate the possibility that in a few years' time we come to realise that- the road that Turkey has to travel doesn't permit it to adopt all the values of Europe.-"
