"Schroeder Not Being Honest on Turkey EU Risk, CDU's Merkel Says
Dec. 6 (Bloomberg) -- German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is not being honest about the risks for the European Union of Turkish membership, opposition leader Angela Merkel said, accusing Schroeder of ``self-deception'' over his policy on Turkey.
Schroeder, 60, has said he will support the Muslim nation's bid to gain a start date for accession talks at next week's summit of the 25-country EU bloc. The negotiations with Turkey, which has a population of 70 million and a per-capita income of about 15 percent of the EU average, may last at least a decade. "
