Why is Turkey so eager to be led down the Belt and Road?
28 October 2017 Author: Nicol Brodie, ANU
Ankara and Beijing are quickly becoming friends. Between souring discourse with the European Union, differing views on Syria and accusations of human rights abuses, Turkey’s formerly strong ties with NATO (its security benefactor) and Germany (its biggest export partner) have chilled. Amid this fallout, the Turkish Foreign Minister promised in August to eliminate any anti-Chinese media reports in Turkey, stating ‘we see China’s security as our security’. In May, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Forum in Beijing.

The dust cloud brought about by Turkey’s authoritarian drift should not be allowed to obscure the reality of the coup itself.
Located 35 kilometers out of Ankara, Akıncı Air Base served two important functions during the coup attempt on the evening of July 15, 2016. It was the base where F-16 fighter planes took off to terrorize the capital with low altitude flights, killing 68 people. And it was also the command center of the plot to overthrow the Turkish government.

Why Turkey’s stability and prosperity matter to the world
A lot has been happening in and around Turkey in the last week. Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the government released its mid-term program for the economy (2018-2020) and the Istanbul Finance Summit deliberated the state of the Turkish economy. Meanwhile, next door the Kurdish authorities held a referendum for independence, causing harsh reactions from the Iraqi central government and anxiety among countries with sizable Kurdish minorities, including Turkey. This is as good a time as any to contemplate the state of the Turkish economy and its geopolitical importance to Europe and its neighboring countries. The Turkish economy experienced a serious dent due to the policy spat with Russia after the downing of a Russian fighter jet, and after the coup attempt in June 2016. Tourism was down by 31 percent, as was foreign direct investment. Tourism really matters to Turkey, which is grappling with a current account deficit of $32.5 billion — the highest in relation to GDP of any G-20 economy. There are other big structural economic imbalances in terms of employment, inflation, education, credit, et al.

This is not going to end well — how long is President Trump going to tolerate it?
During the latter half of the 19th Century, the Ottoman Empire, a Muslim power, was called “the sick man of Europe.” But, like the 800-year Muslim occupation of Spain, the Ottoman Empire was not “of Europe” at all. It occupied European land and had its place in history, but since Charlemagne tried to evict the Muslims from Spain, they were never part of Europe.

Turkey no longer needs EU membership but won't quit talks - Erdogan
By
REUTERS
ANKARA (Reuters) – Turkey no longer needs to join the European Union but will not unilaterally abandon the stalled EU accession talks, President Tayyip Erdogan told parliament on Sunday. “We will not be the side which gives up. To tell the truth, we don’t need EU membership any more,” Erdogan said. Turkey’s 12-year-long accession talks have ground to a halt, with the EU especially critical of Ankara’s crackdown following a failed coup last year. Tens of thousands of people including teachers and journalists have been detained. Erdogan’s government says EU states failed to appreciate the gravity of the threat which Turkey faced, and did not respond to requests to extradite coup suspects. “The EU failed us in a fight against terrorism,” Erdogan said on Sunday, though he also suggested the bloc still needed Turkey. “If the EU is going to leap forward, there is only one way to do so. And it is to grant Turkey membership and start an action of cultural and economic growth,” Erdogan said. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in an election debate last month it was clear Turkey should not join the EU and entry talks should end, despite it being a crucial NATO ally.
