The year 1977 meant elections, a new government and, for my parents and myself, packing up to leave İzmir. This was because my father, an employee of the state broadcaster TRT, had chosen the wrong song for an entertainment program. The love song, which went with the lyrics “We shall walk hand in hand / And always forward…” had been deemed by the state as “communist propaganda.” We would be back in Ankara again.

USA Puts Bulgaria in Turkey's Orbit

Boyan Chukpov, analysts

During the forthcoming visit of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Bulgaria will be broached the main issues of US foreign policy on the Balkans and Bulgaria in particular. I would like to note that in during all visits in the last few years - regardless of their level - energy has always been the main topic. In the beginning was Belene NPP project, followed by South Stream, Nabucco, Burgas-Alexandroupolis and now the probing of shale gas. I believe that one of the accents of the talks would be precisely the issue with the shale gas, because opinions are extremely polarized and not just in Bulgaria but in Europe as a whole.

In 2011 alone, Turkish companies made 26 overseas acquisitions worth 2.9 billion USD. While the report highlights Yildiz Holdings' purchase of Godiva Chocolates as Turkey's most noteworthy overseas purchase, Turkish firms have shown interest in the food and beverage, service, telecommunication, logistics, production and financial services sectors. Other noteworthy Turkish acquisitions, according to the report, are Hurriyet's purchase of Trader Media East, Anadolu Efes' purchase of SABMiller in Russia and Ukraine and Eczacibasi's acquisition of Villeroy&Boch's tiles. ...Being more open-minded and cross-border oriented would also be a powerful stepping stone toward the eventual creation of more dynamic economies in migrants' home countries. Take the example of Turkey. While the country is not even a member of the EU and the language barrier is certainly profound, it has become a very attractive manufacturing economy. A key part of the new-found dynamism rests on the skills transfer of Turkish workers who used to work in Germany before returning home and starting up small businesses. It should go without saying that the 27 members of the EU could do for one another what Germany and Turkey have done together over the past several decades, without any government planning. ...

Lingering over coffee and mezze in Turkey

By Sonia Nazareth | Place: Istanbul | Agency: DNA

A young Turkish bride confides with a giggle as we cruise down the Bosphorus together, “The food is so loved and such a big part of life here, that at my wedding reception, my food was more photographed than me.” I tell her that I’m not surprised. For just about everywhere I go in Istanbul, the most tantalising aromas accost me. So much so that by my third day here, I absent-mindedly nibble on the upholstery of the hired car and am astounded to find it inedible. Behaviour such as this is almost predictable when, in no matter which direction you wave a spoon, you’re guaranteed to find something delectable to munch on.

Cruise to Istanbul is like a floating hotel with views into history
By Peter Mandel

VENICE - You can keep your inland towns that rise over farmland or crouch beside busy rivers. Give me a city that turns its face to the sea.

I like looking out at urban skylines from the deck of a ship. From here, at penthouse height and away from the tangle of crowds and avenues, you get an almost map-clear view of how a port is shaped. So when I read about a Crystal cruise that left from Venice, nosed into the Aegean and Black seas, and ended up in Istanbul, I started imagining myself peering down at ancient capitals of trade like a king atop a sailable throne.

Beware of Turkish Delight

Beware of Turkish Delight

By ANDREW PEAPLE

Talking Turkey is becoming a common market activity.

The Turkish lira has risen 5.2% against the dollar so far this year, putting it among the world's best-performing currencies. Turkey's government bonds rallied this week as investors' risk tolerance recovered. Yet Turkey is attracting prominent skeptics—among them, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and Goldman Sachs—who see its wide current account deficit as a risk that bring its economy to a hard landing. That may prove too gloomy a forecast. But Turkey's policy makers would be wise not to declare victory too soon.

Moving to Turkey was a bumpy rite of passage

9:32AM GMT 27 Jan 2012

Just imagine the absurdity of two openly gay, recently married, middle-aged, middle-class men escaping the liberal sanctuary of anonymous London to relocate to a Muslim country. The country in question was not Iran (we had no desire to be lynched from the nearest olive tree), but neighbouring Turkey, a secular nation practising a moderate, state-supervised brand of Islam. For us, Turkey was the perfect choice for our place in the sun since we’d been dipping our toes in this side of the Aegean for years and were already hooked. Added to this, we had to be within an easy commute of Blighty for family reasons; there could be no lazing on a beach in Thailand or Belize for us. The deal-clincher was that Turkey was outside the eurozone, so our money went that bit further.

Turkey is facing a difficult period with respect to ties with its triangle of neighbors: Iran, Syria and Iraq. Their current domestic situations and foreign policies are now endangering Turkey’s own domestic stability and foreign policy. A polarization now appears to exist in this regard and the triangle of Iran, Syria and Iraq’s Shiite population maintain somewhat similar attitudes vis-à-vis Turkey. The major reasons behind this state of affairs are regional power rivalries, conflicting attitudes towards the Arab Spring, and a mutually held stance in relation to the West. Developments currently unfolding within the triangle are now seen by Turkey as a cause of grave concern that will be difficult to overcome.

Bulgaria, Turks and the politics of apology
During Bulgaria's 'Restoration of Names' process, nearly one million ethnic Turks were humiliated, says author.

London, United Kingdom - In 1989, under the last Communist government, nearly five per cent of the population in Bulgaria left the country as a result of the forced ethnic assimilation policy for Bulgaria's ethnic Turkish population. Soon after, Communism collapsed.

The action, cynically called "Restoration of the Names" or "Revival Process", did not contribute to the end of Communism in Bulgaria. It was more like a sign of the agony of a rotten regime resorting to the shock of populist nationalism to defibrillate its dying heart. It took the Bulgarian parliament 22 years to adopt a declaration apologising to its own citizens for the suffering inflicted on them.

For Turkish Journalists, Arrest Is A Real Danger

January 26, 2012

In the wake of the Arab Spring, some Muslims in North Africa are looking across the Mediterranean to Turkey as a potential model of a state that can be modern, Islamic and democratic.

But some analysts in the region say that model is flawed, and they are questioning Turkey's human-rights record and its dealings with the press.

Turkey: Global Gender Gap Study Finds Turkish Women Still Stuck
January 24, 2012 - 4:49pm, by Yigal Schleifer

The World Economic Forum's annual Global Gender Gap study was released this week and contains mostly sobering numbers regarding the status of women in Turkish political and economic life. Turkey's position in the study -- at 122 out of 135 countries surveyed -- was up slightly compared to last year, when the country came in at 126. Still, the ranking places Turkey in between Syria and Egypt and well below several of its other neighbors. Looking at the study's trend lines, while women's political participation in Turkey has been slowly inching up over the last several years, their participation in economic life has been slowly eroding.

Gwynne Dyer: The Armenian massacres and the French presidential elections

French president Nicolas Sarkozy sucks up to Armenians just in time for elections.

By Gwynne Dyer, January 24, 2012

I go to France quite often, but after this article is published, I may be liable to arrest if I set foot in the country.

The French parliament has just passed a bill, proposed by President Nicolas Sarkozy’s party, that will make it a crime to question whether the Armenian massacres in eastern Turkey in 1915 qualified as a genocide. Sarkozy will doubtless sign it into law next month, just in time for the presidential elections.
