One reason is that Turkey may face electricity shortages in the near future, furthermore Turkey has just ratified [the] Kyoto agreement which is going to result in carbon emission reduction targets for the post 2013 period."

Recep Tayyip Erdogan may be about to deliver the biggest blow yet to the fraying ultra-nationalist legacy of Turkey's founding father and first president, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. But ironically given recent controversies, the prime minister's anticipated demarche is not about advancing his supposed Islamist agenda. Instead it concerns the rights of Turkey's 12 million-strong ethnic Kurd minority, which Ataturk did more than most to suppress."

MEHMET ALİ BİRAND
I placed the newspapers down in front of me and tried to understand.
This on going fight, or tension, between the Supreme Council of Judges and Public Prosecutors, or HSYK, and the government for weeks now has finally been settled, but I still don’t know what to call it. Maybe a similar situation took place before but it wasn’t reflected to the public. This time, for the record, a merciless negotiation took place between the Justice Ministry and the HSYK."

Persistent Anti-Americanism in Turkey: External or Internal Causes?
"Persistent Anti-Americanism in Turkey: External or Internal Causes?
By Soner Cagaptay and Yurter Ozcan
July 29, 2009
Over the past years, some analysts have suggested that George W. Bush's unpopular administration spawned the high levels of anti-Americanism in Turkey. Referring to this phenomenon as 'anti-Bushism,' however, discounted the rise of anti-Americanism in Turkey and implied that the country's adverse view of the United States would change with a new administration. Unfortunately, two recent polls suggest otherwise. Despite the new faces in Washington -- policymakers who have gone out of their way to embrace Turkey and its citizens -- anti-Americanism persists across Turkish society."

Juliette Lewis has a reputation for being somewhat of a wild child. But the 36-year-old actress-singer says she is mellower than people would think. 'I would rather be on the road with my band or traveling than out partying,' Lewis said. The actress, who co-stars with Drew Barrymore in 'Whip It!' and stars opposite Jennifer Aniston in next year's 'The Baster,' opens for the Pretenders on a U.S. tour kicking off Aug. 5 (myspace.com/juliettelewis ). Her new album, 'Terra Incognita,' will be in stores Sept. 9. '‘Terra Incognita' means unknown territory, and that was my whole mission with this record—to do something different,' Lewis said. 'The songs stem from my travels. To me, this record is really diverse, haunting, beautiful and eclectic.'"

China risks living down to its enemies’ stereotype
"China risks living down to its enemies’ stereotype
...Even as Beijing coddles local business, it offends neighbours by tormenting its own citizens. The clampdown this month on China’s Muslim population in western Xinjiang province has outraged Turkey, a close trading partner and ethnic cousin of the country’s beleaguered Uighurs.
While the US and EU have been predictably docile in the face of China’s repression, Turkey has forcefully condemned it. Ankara has even threatened to abrogate lucrative defence deals, a move that would certainly concentrate minds in a government that has been under a global arms embargo since it lethally put down pro-democracy demonstrations in 1989."

The history of Konya — a city as well as a district in Turkey — dates back to 7000-6000 BC. But, Konya gained its real name and fame when, after his father Bahauddin Valad’s death in 1231 AD, Maulana (Turkish ‘Mevlana’) Jalaluddin Rumi permanently settled here. I always had a burning desire to visit Konya and pay tribute to this all-time great mystic poet of Islam. However, let me admit here that my passion to visit Maulana’s tomb was primarily stimulated by the Great Whirling Show which is held there as a centuries-old ritual."

"Can Turkey's Trashy Coasts Be Transformed?
by Jennifer Hattam, Istanbul, Turkey on 07.26.09
They say when you're really in love, you become a bit blind to the object of your affection's flaws. If that's true, my love affair with Istanbul must still be going strong, because I often barely even seen the trash strewn everywhere anymore. It took a visit from some San Francisco friends to make me realize how firmly my blinders had become fastened. I would take them to a spot I found lovely and "natural," and they would say, "It would be great if there wasn't so much garbage." But the observations of a cyclist who recently pedaled around the Black Sea suggest I might not be the only one who's become inured to the sight."

A landmark gas pipeline
"A landmark gas pipeline
The prime ministers of Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Turkey signed the intergovernmental accord, a milestone in the Nabucco pipeline project, which has been delayed by lack of commitment from gas-exporting countries.
The 3,300-kilometer conduit is planned to become operational in 2014 at an estimated cost of 7.9 billion euros (10.9 billion dollars).
It is due to pump billions of cubic meters of gas from the Caspian Sea to Austria via Turkey and the Balkans, bypassing Russia, which has been accused of using gas as a weapon by cutting it off in disputes with its neighbors."

"A Year of Green, Seasonal Eating in Istanbul (Slideshow)
by Jennifer Hattam, Istanbul, Turkey
It's easy to see what seasonal eating looks like while grocery shopping in Turkey. Sure, the large chain supermarkets out in the suburbs have all sorts of exotic imports, but at the neighborhood manav (greengrocer), you know summer is on the way when strawberries start to appear, tumbling from sidewalk stands in what seems like endless bounty -- and then they're all but gone until the next year. (Though organic growers near the city are still small and few, the local magazine Time Out Istanbul has some good tips for eating organic in Istanbul.) Following in Collin's Oregon-centric footsteps, here's what 12 months of eating local, seasonal food looks like Istanbul."

For some, the arrest of the highest-ranking officers in Turkey's 63-year history of multi-party democracy is a critical blow against a once-untouchable military that has toppled four elected governments since 1960.
For others, the charges are an invention of the ruling AKP party to weaken the secular army and open the way for the country's Islamisation."
