Trading the Globe: fresh look at Turkey - NASDAQ.com

"Trading the Globe: fresh look at Turkey
Emerging Money

Turkey is still one of the most crucial markets out there, but after its recent wild swings is it a bargain or a profit-taking opportunity? That is the topic on this week's Trading the Globe. First of all, why are we still talking about Turkey? For one thing, with 82 million people, it is still the 15th most populous country in the world, and 26% of that population is still under 15 years old. In other words, the fundamentals have not gone away."

A re-positioned Turkey

"A re-positioned Turkey

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

There is no question that Turkey has re-positioned itself geopolitically. The shift, a historic one, became clear over the past two years. It has been a move from a fundamentally Western to an independent and more Eastern foreign policy orientation. How is this historic? It changes the once-thought irreversible direction Mustafa Kemal Atatürk set for the country. His and the Republic’s founding aim were to point Turkey westward. From the founding, through the world wars and up to recent years, Western-oriented secularism was Turkey’s global face."

CIHANGIR, ISTANBUL— From Thursday's Globe and Mail
Published Wednesday, Apr. 20, 2011 3:57PM EDT

After one of our many breakfasts at Van Kahvalti Evi, co-owner Cetin Simsek brought over a pocket-size Turkish-English dictionary and pieced together a conversation made mostly of unconjugated verbs. “Marry?” he wondered. No, we weren’t married. “Devour!” we cried. He was glad to hear we liked the food. “Sleep?” he asked, gesturing toward Sultanahmet, the district boasting an extraordinary concentration of historic sights and tourist hotels. No, we assured him, we were staying right here in Cihangir. “Ah, Cihangir,” Simsek said, nodding. “Coffee, people, cats.” "
