World Peace Herald-UN to probe rising suicides by Turkish women

"UN to probe rising suicides by Turkish women
By UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL
Published May 24, 2006

ANKARA, Turkey -- The United Nations is investigating the sharp rise in suicides by women in Turkey to see if any of them are being forced to kill themselves by their families.

The investigation by U.N. envoy Yakin Erturk will focus on claims the high suicide rates are linked to tougher laws against honor crimes which in turn are encouraging some families to order the women to take their own lives to protect family honor, reports the BBC. "

The New Anatolian-EIB extends EUR 500 mln loan to Turkish Airlines

"EIB extends EUR 500 mln loan to Turkish Airlines

EkoTürk News Agency / Ankara

The European Investment Bank is providing up to EUR 500 million of loans to Turkish Airlines (THY) for the expansion and renewal of its aircraft fleet between 2005 and 2008. Rising demand for air travel and the company’s ageing fleet are making the modernisation and renewal of THY a key challenge for the company’s development. To support the airline, the EIB is lending EUR 500 million for the part-financing of 36 Airbus aircraft as well as two flight simulators, which will be based at Istanbul Atatürk International Airport.
THY aims to capitalize on a significant increase in international business and leisure traffic and intends to maintain its lead in the domestic market with its modern aircraft family. Responding to the sharp increase in passenger traffic in recent years, Turkish Airlines has recently announced 24 new destinations strengthening the Company’s position as a global airline. "

The New Anatolian-Iran blocks common declarations of women's empowerment conference

"Iran blocks common declarations of women's empowerment conference

The New Anatolian / Ankara

A key intergovernmental conference on women yesterday fell short of a final declaration and contented itself with a 'presidential declaration' when Iran insisted on the inclusion of radical Islamic and anti-U.S. elements in the declaration.

The conference, 'Empowering Women in Public Life,' brought together participants from all over the world for two days to discuss concrete action for gender equality in the political, economic and social fields.

The participants included an Iranian delegation, which surprisingly participated in the conference organized by Turkey under the Greater Middle East Initiative (GME) but, when the time came for final discussions, insisted on wording unacceptable to the other participants."

TKS on National Review Online-The Overhyping of Ugly Americans

".....I’ve now been overseas for about fourteen months and change; in that time I’ve visited Turkey, Great Britain, Hungary, Austria, Israel, Germany, Spain and Jordan. (More to come.) Here’s a bit of what I’ve seen regarding Ugly Americans and Ugly Other Folk:

*
For starters, in my neck of the woods, just about every member of the U.S. embassy and every American expat that I know speaks a little Turkish. “Ve Az Turkje Bilyorum.” (“And I know a little Turkish.”) I don’t say this to pat myself on the back (my Turkish beyond basic greetings, ordering at restaurants, and giving directions is pretty terrible; I’ve found my skill at charades growing exponentially) but simply to offer the contrast I’ve heard from my Turkish friends – that other diplomats in town, particularly European ones, often know much less of the native language or none at all. More than a few have given the impression to Turks that they find learning any of the language beneath them. Which is a shame, because the Turks know that their language is not a common one, and they seem to appreciate any effort to try to speak it, no matter how much you mangle it. Or, they’re just being nice to me. (Insert joke about the “soft bigotry of low expectations” here.)"

"What Does the Turkish Veil Hide?
Elias Harfouch Al-Hayat - 23/05/06//

Advocates of secularism in Turkey use to the same logic as the 'Takfiri' attitudes prevalent in our region. They deny the rights of religious people to express their beliefs through the simplest and most natural means. This is the attitude that has become characteristic of a region that leaves no room for a little tolerance of others or acceptance of differences."

"Cross-dressing show falls victim to disquiet

WORLD BRIEFINGS
By Nicholas Birch
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

ISTANBUL
He's a lady? Not in Turkey, he's not. Some would de-scribe it as a victory for common sense, others as a victory for a faintly homophobic form of family values. But a recent decision by a Turkish TV channel to scrap a show deemed a threat to public morals also is a sign of Turks' deeply conflicted attitudes toward the European Union and the West, local analysts say.
As ideas for television shows go, Kanal 1's latest money-spinner was simple. Take eight men, wax their legs, squeeze them into skirts and dump them in a camera-filled kitchen for three weeks. "

NATO TOOK NEUTRAL POSITION IN EVERYTHING

"NATO TOOK NEUTRAL POSITION IN EVERYTHING

Special Representative of NATO Secretary General on South Caucasus issues Robert Simons distrusted the statements of some of our leaders that in 2015 the Armenian army will completely comply with NATO standards. “It will not take place at once. It will be impossible to finish the process by 2015, as it is impossible to graduate the university at once. Even NATO member states continue their reforms. In this sense, it is hard to set deadlines and to affirm that reforms will be over before the set time. It is a continuous process,” he told a news conference at foreign ministry. "

"Sultan and Saints

(May 23, 2006) Istanbul — I began the day like all the other San Antonians who found themselves overseas on the night of the playoffs: We were boarding the van to take us to Sultanahmed, and I logged on to find out how our beloved Spurs had fared during the night.

'Don't tell us the score unless they won,' joked Veysel Demir, our guide.

It wouldn't have mattered. Those who weren't watching my face would have known by the gasp I emitted when the headline popped up on the screen."
