Are Turks Being Shanghaied?

By: Semih Idiz for Al-Monitor Turkey Pulse Posted on April 30.

After waiting for two years, Turkey finally became a dialogue partner of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) last week, thus moving a step closer to fulfilling a desire by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to one day becoming a full member of what is predominantly a security bloc — that some argue is not only a counterbalance to NATO but also provides Ankara with an alternative to its stalled European Union membership bid.

Across the Turkish-Armenian divide

Across the Turkish-Armenian divide

William Armstrong - william.armstrong@hdn.com.tr

Turkish-Armenian rapprochement, remember that? The 98th anniversary of the 1915 tragedy passed last week, but all official moves to bridge the divide are currently on ice and the issue appears to have taken a back seat. There was a time not so many years ago when the question was firmly in the headlines - a brief, tentative diplomatic thaw that ultimately petered out. In fact, that wasn’t just an official semi-glasnost, but a cultural one too. Journalist and writer Ece Temelkuran’s “Deep Mountain” was first published in 2008, presenting Turkish readers with a bold new title dissenting from the official line of the state. In it, Temelkuran set herself the ostensibly simple task of meeting Armenians, talking to them, listening to them, and reporting back for the Turkish audience. Eschewing the directly political, she preferred “to write about Armenians, not necessarily what happened in 1915,” and while this may seem like a modest undertaking to an outsider, in Turkey at the time it was a taboo-shaking exercise.

Turkey: What's the Way Forward for Ankara's Syria Policy?
April 30, 2013 - 2:21pm, by Yigal Schleifer

The Turko-file

Like most other countries, Turkey has no desire to see the current Syrian regime stay in power but also has little appetite for intervening militarily in Syria. At the same time, like many of its neighbors, Ankara is finding itself dealing with a growing Syrian refugee and humanitarian crisis, one that could have a disruptive effect on Turkey's own domestic affairs.

Blurring the Borders: Syrian Spillover Risks for Turkey

Europe Report N°225 30 Apr 2013

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Turkey has struggled to find the right response to the Syrian civil war, which has brought shellfire, bombs, militias, refugees, sectarian tensions and uncertainty to its southern border. It has so far generously welcomed at least 300,000 Syrians. But this number could triple this year and prove unsustainable, with Turkey and the international community slow to work together, the Syrian conflict in a stalemate and Syria turning into a failed state. The border province of Hatay – whose geography and population make it a microcosm of Syria in Turkey – epitomises the humanitarian and security challenges Ankara faces. But Hatay also shows how refugees can be safely looked after. Turkey should allow entry to destitute Syrians waiting to cross, and change its regulations so that it can better receive international funds and assistance. The international community in turn should be far more generous and engaged in support of the Turkish aid effort.

Turkey's nuclear dawn approaches - BUSINESS NEW EUROPE

Turkey's nuclear dawn approaches

David O'Byrne in Istanbul
April 30, 2013

It's a well-accepted maxim among Turks, that in Turkey things take longer than they do elsewhere.

As long ago as the 1960s when Europe was investing heavily in nuclear power plant to meet fast growing demand, Turkey's top technical universities began offering courses in nuclear engineering aimed at training the engineers who would develop the country's own planned nuclear power sector. Some 45 years on and those graduates may finally have the chance to put their learning into practice as plans for a new 4.8-gigawatt (GW), Russian-designed plant in Akkuyu finally appears set to make it off the drawing board following a $20bn agreement between the Russian and Turkish governments signed in 2010.

Turkish Soap Operas: The Unstoppable Boom

By Yeliz Candemir

Turkey’s economy may have slowed sharply last year but one export remains red hot: Turkish soap operas.

Often slushy, kitsch and highly addictive, Turkish soaps have since 2008 become a staple in living rooms across the Middle East, North Africa and the Balkans; enjoying wild popularity in ostensibly traditional societies for their portrayal of modern life styles and relationships. The popularity of the shows – from the Ottoman-inspired “Magnificient Century” to the slick “Ask-i Memnu” starring heartthrob Kivanc Tatlitug – has spawned a sizeable secondary stimulus for Turkey, boosting the country’s tourism and fashion trades as soap-addicts flock to Turkey to tour the sites of their favorite shows.

THOUGH Cyprus is a small island it is remarkable how different the development of tourism north and south of the Green Line has been. Details are shown in the table below which covers the period from 2000 to 2012, and shows that though the number of tourists visiting northern Cyprus has increased in proportion to those in the south from 16 per cent in 2000, to 43 per cent in 2010, revenues were still much lower in 2011 at 17 per cent in northern Cyprus. This brings out the fundamental difference in the structure of the tourist markets.

Turkey at the Crossroads of European Energy Politics - Electric Light & Power

Turkey at the Crossroads of European Energy Politics
By Abdul Tahir Bhutta

The availability of energy has become crucial for the economies of all the developed and the developing countries of the world. As the sources of energy are scarce and scattered, their transportation and storage are of concern to all the industrialized countries of the world. These countries now want to ensure that their supply of energy is safe and secure and there are no stoppages in its flow and availability. Therefore, energy security has assumed a high place in the agendas of these states. The European Union, whose member states are totally dependent on energy supplies from outside, has also placed energy security high on its agenda.1 The EU is actively seeking to diversify its sources of energy supply, besides paying attention to the efficient use of energy. It wants to ensure that it has a resilient supply system which would not be affected by disruptive events. The EU is one of the biggest consumers of energy besides China and India.2

The problem with clichés is that while glib reductionism can often result in trite or inaccurate generalizations, they can equally as often offer a neat summary of an altogether more complex idea. So it is with Turkey, the oft-lauded "bridge between east and west", a country "at a crossroads", "with one foot on both continents", which – depending on your point of view – is either "to the east looking west", or less often "already in the west and looking east".

Turkey: No Checks, Few Balances

by Steven A. Cook
April 23, 2013

“Recep Tayyip Erdogan is Turkey’s first Pharaoh!” a contact in Turkey declared to me recently over breakfast in Ankara.  “Not a Sultan?,” I countered teasingly.  “No, the Sultans had some checks on their power.  Today Tayyip Erdogan’s power is absolute.”  My friend, who would fall within the category of right-of-center nationalist, assured me that his Pharaoh comment was not meant to be an insult, but rather a statement of fact.   That’s hard to believe given what the leaders of ancient (and not so ancient) Egypt stood for and the principles by which Erdogan and his associates claim to have governed Turkey for the last almost eleven years.  Indeed, when Erdogan, Abdullah Gül, and the people around them broke from Turkey’s Islamist old guard and established the Adelet ve Kalkinma Partisi (Justice and Development Party, AKP) they offered Turks a vision of a democratic and prosperous Turkey.

Under the headline "Ankara's Economic Miracle Collapses'', I argued a year ago in the Middle East Quarterly that Turkey's economic prowess had more hype than substance. The government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had financed a consumer bubble with a huge trade deficit financed by short-term interbank loans. The consumer boom is gone, but the credit bubble continues, with bank lending still expanding by 30% a year despite the stalled economy.

Chief Assistant Dr. Boyko Marinkov from the Institute for Balkan Studies and Center for Thracology with the Bulgarian Academy of Science in an interview with FOCUS News Agency

FOCUS : Mr. Marinkov, what is your comment on the map of the so-called New Turkey that was published by the Turkish media?

Dr. Boyko Marinkov: This map is entirely for local use within the frames of the Turkish political life. It is addressed inwards rather than outwards.

FOCUS : Why do you think that way?

Dr. Boyko Marinkov: At the moment Turkey is going through very interesting period. Chronology until 2010-2011 was even and comparatively clear. Domination of the Party of Justice and Development was undoubted. Its results grew in percentage rate during the elections in 2002, 2007 and 2011. Respectively confidence in the ruling party grows. Starting from 34%, passing through 45% and reaching 49,9% votes in favor of the Party for Justice and Development. This is the superb period in the 10-year term of Erdogan. Only one Turkish politician Adnan Menderes has completed a full ten-year term and won three elections. This happens from 1950 to 1960. Erdogan turns exactly ten years as Prime Minister on March 13, 2013.

Istanbul 2020:Crossing the Waterways between Europe and Asia

TIM LEFFEL / Sports Features Communications

(SFC) Istanbul is a city on the water, but unlike many port cities, it’s not just one body of water that has shaped its history. Due to some geological quirks back when the Ice Age ended, a lake turned into the Sea of Marmara, connected to the Aegean and the Mediterranean seas. The really big advantage was the opening of the Bosphorus—a deep salt water river leading to the Black Sea.

The arts and the economy might be prospering, but critics fear old Istanbul is turning into a new Dubai

Late on a spring Friday evening, İstiklal Caddesi, the main shopping thoroughfare in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district, exudes all the delicious traditional Turkish aromas: roasting chestnuts, fierce black coffee, döner grills and simit, İstanbul’s bagel, still selling like hot cakes way after midnight. Most of all, though, milling with the crowd, you are struck by something else, something less familiar these days, in Europe anyway: the smell of money.
