6:18 AM, Jul. 31, 2011 |

Last week, beside a fireplace in a living room at the Sugarbush Inn in Warren, two teenage girls told me of their plans to raise awareness among young adults of the prevalence of violence against women. A few minutes later, along the couches near the inn's main entrance, two teenage boys outlined for me their program to encourage public schools to expand their recycling programs.

Both ideas -- only two of a dozen and a half that I heard about that day -- were inspiring. But here is what excited me the most: The two girls were visiting Vermont from Armenia. The two boys had journeyed to the Green Mountains from Turkey."

Turkey's High-Stakes Power Struggle

"Turkey's High-Stakes Power Struggle

Daily Beast | Newsweek, July 29, 2011

Turkey's military has staged coups before, but never one like this week's: by resigning, they created a power gap that destabilizes the government -- and shows how much the country needs them.

The Turkish military has carried out many coups, some by force and others by decree. But never before has the military done what it did on Friday, staging an 'inverted coup' not by stepping into politics but by stepping out of its job, through a strike-style walkout by its top leadership. "

"Revolution in Istanbul / Turkish rewrite
By Zvi Bar'el

For the first time in the history of modern Turkey, the military leadership quit over a disagreement with the government, rather than the government being the one to go. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan grabbed the historic opportunity that fell into his lap with both hands. Now he can definitively impose civil rule over the military, destroying one of fundamental principles of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's regime. That principle gave the army the authority to defend the foundations of the constitution, and thus also to remove governments that did not comply with Ataturk's principles. "

Back from yet another visit to Turkey, the best yet. Istanbul, as ever, was glorious, confirming the words of a famous poet, who once wrote:

Each day eclipsed the previous one as we marvelled at the amazing artefacts at the Topkapi Palace, the jaw-dropping power of belief at the Blue Mosque, the conjoined history of Islam and Christianity in the Hagia Sophia, the mind-blowing Sufi Dervishes whirling, whirling in the love of God. All interspersed with raki and the most fabulous fish restaurants and lamb kebabs and the best vegetables in the world. We went fishing on Sunday on the Bosphorus and, after a hamam in the morning, left the next day for Cappadocia for more wonder. Amazing landscapes, limestone caves with seventh-century frescoes, a bizarre Valley of Imagination and a hot-air balloon ride. And, of course, this wasn’t enough, so we went to Ismir to visit my uncle and aunt who took us on their magnificent yacht, Lady J, cruising in the Aegean … like I said, each day eclipsed the previous one."

A long period of silence has been broken in Turkish-European Union relations with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s official visit to northern Cyprus. In the column, I noted that there isn’t simple relationship between Turkey’ s current account deficit and growth, giving the 2006-2008 episode as an example. That was kind of cheating, as oil prices were an important factor that period:"

Taking the long view on Anatolia’s intermediary role between East and West, it is indeed true that there has been much written on the issue. The Erdogan regime is interested in having Turkey play an essential diplomatic role between West (NATO, especially US) and Middle East. It is no secret that Turkey wants to recapture some of its Ottoman glory through diplomacy; it wants a greater geopolitical role that would give it leverage to have a voice in determining the regional balance of power."

"THE OUTLOOK: Turkey's Lessons For Greece On Fixing Fiscal Mess

ISTANBUL (Dow Jones)--Why can't Greece be more like Turkey?

That is what Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou asked his country's legislators late last month as he tried to herd them into voting for an austerity package that was triggering riots.

Papandreou was referring to the success that Turkey had in donning a hair shirt and recovering from a financial crisis in 2001. Now Greece is being asked by creditors to take the same kinds of austerity measures--but whether Greeks will go the distance, and whether they can recover the way Turkey did remains unclear."
