Turkey is a paradise of sun, sea, mountains and lakes and offers a complete change from the stress and routine of everyday life here in the UK. All year round, most places in Turkey have an ideal climate that is never too hot or cold, and is perfect for relaxing on sandy beaches, enjoying walks in the tranquility of the mountains or experiencing the beauty of its lakes. Turkey has a magnificent past, and is full of historic treasures from 13 successive civilizations spanning 10,000 years. Even if you spend only a short time there, you can see some of Turkey's great heritage. Turkey is a country for all seasons and all ages. You can experience each of the four seasons on the same day in some parts of Turkey. During the spring months tourists bask in the glorious Mediterranean sunshine of the south, while on the lofty Taurus mountain tops behind, people are skiing."

TURKEY: What causes intolerance and violence?

"TURKEY: What causes intolerance and violence?
By Güzide Ceyhan The trial in Malatya of those accused of murdering three Protestants has drawn attention again to the question of what causes such intolerance and violence. Güzide Ceyhan, a Turkish Protestant, in a personal commentary for Forum 18 News Service http://www.forum18.org, identifies three trends behind the murders: disinformation by public figures and the mass media; the rise of Turkish nationalism; and the marginalisation of smaller groups from Turkish society. All three trends feed off each other, and all of Turkey's smaller religious communities – those within Islam and Christianity, as well as Baha'is and Jehovah's Witnesses - are affected by them in various ways. Many Turkish people – of all religions and none - are committed to furthering democracy and human rights, while civil society is growing stronger. But for the fundamental right of all Turkish citizens to freedom of thought, conscience and belief to be truly protected, a human rights-based approach is indispensable."

Is the nature of leadership in Israel and Turkey basically the same as in the democracies of Europe?

"Is the nature of leadership in Israel and Turkey basically the same as in the democracies of Europe?

Often, the leaderships of Turkey and Israel are compared to those of Europe. Prior to introducing the topic, the question itself begs two other important questions that will set the context of this essay. First, what do the terms “leadership” and “democracy” imply? In democratic systems, the idea of the executive is so intertwined with the overall system of governance that one is unable to differentiate between the two. Second, one must question what we mean by “Europe”. Democratic leadership variation, while existing among all states part of the European continent, is particularly pronounced between members and non-members of the EU."

Afterwards efforts to build up the draft constitution, aiming to simplify the complicated judicial structure of the EU began. This draft on which there became serious discussions was finally recognized by head of the governments and states in 2004. While of minor importance to most Turks in comparison to their national football team’s efficient victory over a weak Bosnia-Herzegovina side and the team’s resulting accession to the Euro 2008 tournament, this past week also featured the Turkish government culminating an impressive flurry of foreign affairs activity. Although the Turkish national team has little chance under its coach, Fatih Terim, whose arrogance shadows his remarkable flair for dramatic dress-shirt and jacket collars, the government’s latest efforts will surely give Milli Takfans something to talk about beyond their team’s early exit from the European football championship tournament this summer."

Showdown for Ataturk's Republic - On Line Opinion - 26/11/2007

"Showdown for Ataturk's Republic By Slater Bakhtavar - posted Monday, 26 November 2007

'A nation which makes the final sacrifice for life and freedom does not get beaten.' Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of the Republic of Turkey.

In early October, members of the separatist Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK) stationed in northern Iraq, instigated a clandestine military attack which led to 12 casualties. This attack is a minuscule part of a spate of intensified attacks by the the PKK, whose agenda includes the autonomy of Turkey’s southeast region and an end to Turkish assimilation. They have infiltrated segments of northern Iraq and Turkey, and use ferocious tactics which include, but are not relegated to, kidnappings, beheadings, tactical bombings, and pillaging. This month alone, the Kurds have racked up a body count of 42 Turks and kidnapped eight others. In just 20 years it is believed that the organisation, which is designated a 'terrorist organisation' by the United States and Europe, has murdered over 30,000 people."

Jewish Typography in Ottoman Lands

"Jewish Typography in Ottoman Lands

Although Hebrew presses operated in Spain and Portugal during the 15th century, due to persecutions and expulsions many incunables printed there did not survive in more than one copy or in complete copies; of those that did, fragments are extremely rare or unique (and it is assumed that some Iberian Hebrew incunables have been lost altogether). Printing was introduced to the Ottoman Empire and North Africa by Jewish refugees from Spain and Portugal, and in the subsequent centuries books in Hebrew and other languages were printed throughout the 'Sephardic diaspora,' in Turkey, Greece, North Africa, the Orient, Western Europe (Italy, Holland, Germany), and elsewhere. The geographic range of the Sephardic world is manifest in that a third of the surviving books in any exhibited collection of early Jewish printing are Sephardic works by Sephardic Jewish authors."

Turkey’s economy is booming. GDP, being around 181 billion dollar in 2001; is estimated to be about 500 billion US dollar by the end of 2007. With the purchasing power parity (PPP) it will pass 750 billion US dollar. In other words, Turkey’s economy has grown almost three times in less than six years. The total volume of export was 31 billion dollar in 2001; by 2007 it passed 100 billion dollar. Furthermore growth in some sectors is quintuplicate. Turkey’s economy that was not able to allure foreign capital even in amount of 1-2 billion dollar in the past, now only in 2006 allured more that 20 billion dollars direct foreign capital. It is expected that for direct foreign investments to pass 20 billion dollar in 2007 too. Thus, Turkey became the 15. biggest economy in the world and 5. economy in Europe. "Mending Turkish-American relations Saturday, November 24, 2007

İlter TÜRKMEN

One consequence of the Iraqi war was the damage it did to Turkish-American relations after 2003, sometimes to the point of creating serious crises. So much so that the majority of the Turkish public now perceives the U.S. as Turkey's adversary. There's no doubt that both governments share the responsibility for bringing the relations to this point. The U.S. chose to ignore the fact that the developments in Iraq had assumed detrimental effects to Turkey following the 3/1 motion. On the other hand, the Turkish government did not only remain indifferent to the development of an emotional as well as dangerous anti-Americanism, it sometimes stimulated this feeling under the influence of populism. Turkey and America have failed to establish a dialogue based on mutual trust. The draft decision on the Armenian genocide' allegations that kept coming up every year in the American Congress also served to feed this tension. "

Interest Group Foreign Policy

"....Of course, the Armenian genocide resolution was introduced to bash Turkey, not to teach history. The Armenian lobby hoped to use the U.S. Congress as its club. In seeking to advance its agenda, the lobby exhibited an almost frivolous disregard for the impact on U.S. foreign policy. Only when the magnitude of the threat to U.S.-Turkish relations become too obvious for even a hermit to miss did the House Democratic leadership sideline the resolution. Whether Congress should have yielded to Turkish pressure after making the measure a priority is an open question. But on its merits the resolution should never have come up."

The president of the Olive and Olive Oil Union has said their long-term target is to use only trademarked products in their export operations. Turkey is seeing a trend toward the export of processed value-added goods, which create much higher profits, rather than bulk sales. Olive and Olive Oil Union President Cahit Çetin spoke with the Anatolia news agency yesterday. He said his union is number one in Turkey for the export of packaged olive products, holding a 20 percent share. It has increased sales abroad through its newly opened stores in the US, Canada and Germany, where consumer bought a total 3,000 tons of trademarked products. Çetin noted that these stores have also worked as liaison offices in establishing business ties with the domestic sellers of other countries, thus opening up new sale points."

"A sudden rush of awareness on Kurdish rights
Semih Idiz Thursday 22 November 2007 - 07:00

Judging by what former commanders are saying now, Turkey’s approach to the Kurdish issue was fundamentally flawed from the start Winston Churchill is reputed to have said of the American’s that “they always get it right” going on to add, after a brief pause for effect, “eventually!” One wonders if the same might not be said of Turks. After all we, too, have a Turkish saying - “Türkün aklı sonra başına gelir” - which more or less translates into what Churchill said of the Americans, except that it is about Turks. This saying appears to be corroborated once again after some of the most senior of former commanders of the Turkish Armed forces, now retired, have started to “admit” what has been obvious to many for decades."
